Haleakala

This day would explore upcountry and all the majesty of Haleakala. Our day would begin by visiting surfing goat dairy where we could sample their internationally awarded cheeses after seeing how they were made, pet the baby goats and maybe even indulge in some of their exquisite goat milk chocolate truffles. Next we would move on to the Kula lavender farm. An amazing opportunity to experience agricultural tourism at its finest. This is a beautiful botanical garden with numerous species of Mauis most magnificent flora that sits at about 4000 feet above sea level. From here the views are spectacular as you meander through the beautiful gardens. From indemic plants and trees to endless strains of lavender that fill the air with that soothing smell, this location is truly special. Next we would head over to the Ulupalakua ranch country store and the Tedeschi vineyard. Here we could enjoy a lunch sourced from the Aina; fresh local Maui beef, venison or elk burgers all sourced from the Ulupalakua ranch itself. The country store also boasts a tremendous “cowboy” charm that brings us into the “paniolo” culture of old and current Maui. After lunch we can go explore the vineyard and perhaps sample some of their delicious wines. While some of the wines are made of the traditional grape varietals, many of the wines are made with pineapple! A delicious and tropical twist that is sure to please:) From here we will continue up the mountain to explore the crater of the volcano. We can do 2 different small hikes. 1 from peak elevation. From here it looks like you are entering another world! The topography is like that of being on the moon with rolling red and black sands, and craters all around. The other hike is at a lower elevation where thick indemic flora, from ferns to Christmas berries rise to waist high and pheasant and nene (rare endangered Hawaiian goose) reside and fly amongst us. Here we make it to a ridge line with sloping drops on either side where clouds dance below us as the winds push them about. The view and the experience is truly majestic!
